Honoring Our Brother: Lee Kraus

Every September, firefighters, emergency medical workers, and their families gather in Colorado Springs, Colorado, to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Located in the shadow of Pikes Peak, the IAFF Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial serves as a permanent tribute to members who have given their lives in service to others. This year, 288 fallen IAFF members will be honored during the 40th Annual Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial Ceremony on September 19, 2026.

Among them is our brother, St. Louis Firefighter Lee Michael Kraus.

Lee dedicated 31 years to serving others, including 27 years as a firefighter and four years as a paramedic with the St. Louis Fire Department. Assigned to Truck Company 35C, Lee died on July 1, 2026, following a medical emergency while on duty.

Lee was known for his steady presence, sharp instincts, loyalty to his crew, and deep respect for the fire service. Outside the firehouse, he enjoyed fishing, hiking, kayaking, and traveling, and was remembered for his humor, curiosity, and sense of adventure.

Our Family Stands Together

This year, St. Louis Firefighters IAFF Local 73 is honored to bring Lee's family to Colorado Springs to attend the Memorial Ceremony.

While we lost Lee, we did not lose his family. They remain a part of the Local 73 family, and we will continue to stand beside them and honor the life and service of our brother.

The Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial is a powerful reminder that when one of our members makes the ultimate sacrifice, their family does not stand alone. The fire service remembers, and we remain there for them.
